ALTO PASS, IL (KFVS) - A Southern Illinois winery teams up with an international livestock provider to help feed families locally and around the world.
Alto Vineyards set the table for the Heifer in the Vines event. Heifer International touches the lives of low income families with free livestock and farming techniques to help them eat.
"The great thing about Heifer is that we're not only giving them animals, but they're also getting an education," said Shirley Krienert.
"The recipients get self-esteem and they feel worthy. It's just phenomenal."
And the organization uses the funds from events like the one at Alto Vineyards on Saturday to do the work they do locally and around the world.
"Heifer works off the philosophy that if you give a man a fish he eats for a day. Teach him how to fish he east for a lifetime.
"They use that as their way of teaching people to help themselves," said Krienert.
And the organization get support from some local agencies too.
"We definitely are sharing the same mission as Heifer International," said Karla Shetter of Shawnee Social Services.
"We are in the community providing our medical, dental and social services to improve the quality of life for people here in Southern Illinois."
