Poplar Bluff street department finds grenade

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A grenade is being handed over to the military after it was found by a street crew in Poplar Bluff Wednesday.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whitely says the street department found the WWI style era grenade at the corner of 5th and Valley.

Poplar Bluff Police Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland says the grenade was found at 1:25 p.m.

He says the grenade had extensive rust and looked to have been in the weather for a long time.

It is not legal to possess a live hand grenade.  It is legal to possess a deactivated grenade.

Wednesday, the police department tweeted "The S.E.M.O. Bomb Team has removed a grenade from the area of 5th & Valley streets and it is being disposed of. Look for details tomorrow."

Mike Williams with the SEMO Bomb Squad says it is handing the grenade over to the military.  It is contained in blast proof container.  Williams says this type of thing happens often.  He says more than half of their calls are for situations such as this.
