The Missouri Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Society of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars is offering a $1000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who vandalized the Confederate War Memorial on October 11.
The Confederate War Memorial in Cape Girardeau was vandalized around Oct. 11.
Cape Girardeau Police tell Heartland News they have not made any arrests for the vandalism.
Someone spray painted the monument, writing, "go south," and, "move to a cemetery in the south."
The memorial was dedicated in 1931 and sits behind the Common Pleas Courthouse.
City workers spent the afternoon Tuesday using wire brushes to clean off the spray paint. They did not want to sandblast the monument fearing that might damage the engravings.
