Work continues on restoring Birds Point Levee

NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Work is continuing on the Birds Point Levee called "Operation Restore."

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, Operation Restore will reconstruct the floodway to pre-operational level of production.

Engineers installed a silt curtain at the center crevasse this week. According to the Corps, the silt curtain will prevent silt plumes from entering the existing scour hole.

The dredge, a machine used to suction material underwater, will pump sand to a booster pump then to the scour hole at the center crevasse. A flexible pipe section will connect the booster pump to the shore pipeline.

According to the Corps, the upper crevasse is 76 percent completed; the center crevasse is 31 percent completed; and the lower crevasse is 89 percent completed.

The project is scheduled to be completed on Nov. 30, 2011.
