Downtown Cairo business fire under investigation

The state fire marshal was in Cairo Wednesday to investigate a fire that destroyed a downtown business.

According to Cairo Fire Chief John Meyer, the fire destroyed the inside of the building that housed K.J. Naps, a beauty supply store at 225 East 8th Street.

The store, which had been in business around four years, had closed for the day and no one was inside the building at the time.

Meyer said firefighters were notified by passerby, who saw smoke coming from the building shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters arrived shortly after and began putting out the blaze.

A cause was not immediately known.

The fire marshal is investigating another fire that struck a downtown Cairo building last week. Firefighters rushed to the old Smith and Groves building at the corner of 8th and Commercial Streets in the early morning hours of Sept. 28, when someone reported seeing the building on fire. The building had been slated for demolition.
