State shuts down pools for non-compliance

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) -

More than a dozen swimming pools in southern Illinois have been closed by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the department, the pools have not complied with state regulations that require all pools and spas to be retrofitted with special grates that prevent swimmers from being trapped by the suction of the filtration intake systems. There are about 500 municipal, park district, school, and hotel pools that are not in compliance.

It's part of a federal law passed in 2007. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa safety act mandates the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to enforce mandatory suction entrapment regulations for all pools and spas.

Here's the list of pools in the heartland that are not in compliance:

  • WM H Brinkley Municipal Pool in Shawneetown
  • Appledome pool in Murphysboro
  • Econo Lodge pool in Carbondale
  • Horizon Inn & Conference Center pool in Carbondale
  • Life Community Center pool in Carbondale
  • Royal Plaza Inn pool in Carbondale
  • Saint Germain Hill Apartments pool in Carbondale
  • Halia Crest pool in Mt. Vernon
  • Quality Inn pool in Mt. Vernon
  • Ramada Limited Inn in Vienna
  • Sparta Municipal Pool in Sparta
  • Delta Health & Wellness Center pool in Herrin
  • Motel Marion pool in Marion

The Illinois Department of Public Health shut those pools down on Oct. 1 because they were still not in compliance.
