Murray popcorn business catches fire

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) -

A fire badly damaged a popcorn production business in Murray Tuesday morning.

According to the Murray Police Department in Calloway County, firefighters are on the scene of a business fire in town.

Police say it is the Ellis Popcorn building that caught fire.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 5 a.m.

Owner Ann Ellis says she was called at 5:15 a.m.  She says the first shift does not begin until 7 a.m., so no one was in the building.

Much of the building was damaged in the fire.  There are corn bins that were not damaged in the fire.  The offices of Tri-State Safety Management are also in the building.

Ellis Popcorn has been in it's current location for 25 years and has been in business for 64 years.

Ellis says her father started the business after he returned from WWII.  She says firefighters were able to save some of her father's WWII memorabilia from the fire.

Ten employees work at the popcorn production facility.

She says the business is insured, but she's not sure what her plans are going forward.

No word on the cause of the fire.
