Saline County voters to face 1% sales tax resolution

SALINE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The future of schools in Saline County will be up to voters come March.

Harrisburg Community School District Superintendent Dennis Smith says a 1 percent sales tax resolution will appear on the spring ballot.

The sales tax increase is estimated to bring in nearly $2 million a year to improve school buildings or pay bonds in Saline County. For Harrisburg, that's nearly $1 million a year to fix an aging high school.

"The tax payers can decide how they want to fix our high school, either through the sales tax on property tax," Smith said. "We'll let them decide then we'll make our plan."

Smith says if the sales tax is not approved, they'll have to look at property taxes. He adds the high school needs to be improved for the safety of staff and students.
