WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Many came out on Saturday to honor a Vietnam veteran killed while riding his motorcycle on route 127 September 23rd.

Friends, family, and fellow soldiers honored the life of 75-year-old Jerald Zallen of Herrin.

Zallen served in the US Army's Cavalry during the Vietnam War and survived the "Valley of the Death."

Later on in his life Zallen wrote a book about the battle featuring the members of the unit he served with in the army.

We're told Zallen loved to ride his motorcycle and visit with his neighbors.

"When he first moved into the neighborhood he was quiet," said Debbie Johnson a friend of Zallen.  "He actually came to our door and asked us if we could all come over and meet him."

Johnson recalls that visit saying, "He sat us down with cake and tea and told us about the book We Are Soldiers."

Zallen was a member of the American Legion in Herrin.  Members of the Legion gave a 21 gun salute at Saturday's ceremony in honor of their fallen comrade.

Also known as "Jack", Zallen will be buried next to his daughter at the Main Post Cemetery in Fort Benning Georgia.
