Arrangements set for Army vet killed in motorcycle wreck

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Arrangements are set for a southern Illinois Army veteran who was part of a Vietnam war battle depicted in the 2002 movie "We Were Soldiers," starring Mel Gibson.

Jerald "Jack" Zallen, 75, of Herrin was killed September 23 when the motorcycle he was riding hit a pickup truck that maneuvered into his path on Highway 127.

Zallen was an Army sergeant who in November 1965 fought in the first major clash between U.S. Troops and the North Vietnamese Army.

It was a bloody three-day battle.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Meredith-Waddell Funeral in Herrin, with military rites to follow.
