A small animal, possibly a squirrel, caused a power outage to nearly 1,000 Ameren Illinois customers in Johnson County.

Vienna High School canceled classes early at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after a power outage in Johnson County.

According to Ameren's power outage website there were nine customers without power in Johnson County as of 1:10 p.m.

Victoria Busch with Ameren Illinois, says a small animal, most likely a squirrel, got into a substation at 10th and Vine in Vienna and caused a switch to burn open.  She says crews are en route to repair the substation.

Busch says the outage began at 7:56 a.m.

Earlier in the morning, more than 800 outages were reported in Massac County, but those are no longer listed in Ameren's site.  That outage is not related to the Vienna outage.

Busch says Brookport and Metropolis were out of power earlier.  She says power to Brookport has been restored.  Busch says heavy fog in the area slowed efforts to assess the outage issue.

Busch says Ameren's linemen did a ground search and could not find anything wrong on their end.
