Former Belleville mayor to run for Costello's seat

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The former mayor of Belleville says he will announce a run for the U.S. Congress seat held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello since 1988.

Roger Cook tells the Belleville News-Democrat on Wednesday ( http://bit.ly/rubwbz ) that he will make an official announcement Saturday. He will run as a Republican and tells the newspaper his platform will be to curb government regulation of business and use cost cutting to reduce the federal deficit.

The 54-year-old Cook faces at least two other declared candidates in the 12th Congressional District Republican primary.

Costello has held the southern Illinois seat for 23 years.
