Charleston police investigate shooting

Police in Charleston are investigating a shooting Wednesday afternoon.

The police chief identifies the victim as 39-year-old Nigel Easton of Charleston.

A Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesman says Easton was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

According to DPS, officers got a call around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday that a person was shot and being driven to the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office.

"I don't know, it's kind of strange but it's the second time we've had someone go to the sheriff's office when they've been shot. But I don't have any reason for it," said DPS Director Robert Hearnes.

Investigators say the shooting took place near the intersection of Vine and Boone Streets in Charleston.

"It's not uncommon for it to take a day or two to figure out what really happened, and it's not uncommon to never find out what happened," said Hearnes.

No suspects were in custody.

Deborah Rigney lives in the area and says she and fellow neighbors are frustrated with the way people act, and concerned for the future of the neighborhood.

"I live over here in this house on the corner, and I've had like two people to drive through my yard tear down bushes, almost tear down, you know, tear up my picnic table," said Rigney. "And other things, and then you can hear them all through the night."

Officers say anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Charleston DPS at (573) 683-3737
