Overnight fire destroys downtown Cairo building

Cairo firefighters battled a blaze in an abandoned downtown building early Wednesday morning.

According to the fire chief, the building was scheduled for demolition later this week.

The old Smith and Groves building  is located on the southeast corner of 8th and Commercial Streets. The fire was called in shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The building is one of several abandoned buildings on the block.

When fire crews arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.  They quickly worked to contain the fire from spreading to other nearby structures.

This is the second fire on the block this year.

In January, four people were arrested after they accidentally set a building on fire while cutting metal with blow torches.

No arson charges were filed in that case.

At this time the chief is not saying what caused this latest fire.
