Nixon noncommittal on signing teacher-website bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon says he wants to talk to teachers and local school boards before deciding whether to sign a bill repealing part of a contentious Missouri law on Internet communications.

Nixon's comments Friday came after Missouri lawmakers sent him a measure repealing a law that prohibits teachers from using websites that allow "exclusive access" with students, such as private messages on Facebook. Instead, the new measure would require local school districts to come up with their own policies on electronic media use between employees and students.

Nixon said it appears the legislation goes further than his call for the special session, which had asked only for a repeal. But the governor says he will give the measure a thorough review.
