Cattle thefts from farms are on the rise

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Price of beef is on the rise and police say that could mean an increase in cattle theft.

Over in southwest Missouri in Jasper County, deputies are trying to locate 177 head of cattle stolen from 6 different farms over the last month.

A local farmer says it's important to take steps to keep your livestock safe.

"You gotta be aware of what's happening so you can have people watching out," said cattle farmer Joe Ford. "We've got families around the farm that keep contact with everybody. If they see something different, they let us know."

The Missouri State Highway Patrol's rural crimes investigative unit works with local law enforcement agencies to track down stolen property and equipment from rural areas.
