Ill. hospitals with tax status decisions on hold

By The Associated Press

At least 17 hospitals and hospital systems have applications for tax-exempt status before the Illinois Department of Revenue. Gov. Pat Quinn has put a hold off on making decisions in these cases pending possible new legislation to clarify how hospitals can earn exemption from local property taxes. Last month, the department denied tax exemptions on properties belonging to three hospitals, citing a 2010 Illinois Supreme Court ruling.

The Illinois Department of Revenue released this list Thursday, culled from parcels with pending applications. A department spokeswoman said the list could be incomplete:

Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, Bolingbrook

Adventist Glen Oaks Hospital, Glendale Heights

Advocate Medical Center, Libertyville

Carle Foundation, Urbana

Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago

Edward Hospital, Naperville (still has pending applications in addition to last month's ruling)

Ferrell Hospital Community Foundation, Eldorado

Hillsboro Hospital, Hillsboro

Kewanee Hospital, Kewanee

Memorial Hospital Association, Carthage

Midwest Medical Center, Galena

Midwest Palliative & Hospice Care Center, Glenview

NorthShore University Health System, Skokie and Chicago

OSF Healthcare System of Rockford, Monmouth

Southern Illinois Hospital Services, Murphysboro

St. Mary's Hospital, Ottawa

Trinity Medical Center, Moline and Rockford
