Deployment ceremony scheduled in Sparta

SPARTA, IL (KFVS) -

There will be a deployment ceremony September 22 for about 160 soldiers who are scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan this fall.

The ceremony for the 661st Engineer Company of Sparta will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta.

The soldiers will train at Fort Bliss, Texas, then deploy to Afghanistan for about 10 months.

The 661st Engineer Company will conduct horizontal engineer missions that include building and repairing roads and site preparation for future buildings.

The unit can build low-water crossings, ditching and culvert emplacement, grading, scraping, fill material emplacement, hauling, stockpile management and pond restoration.

The unit is set to return in the fall of 2012.
