Cairo announces construction of new emergency room

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

Cairo Mayor Tyrone Coleman says this could be the economic spark the area has been looking for.

Ninety new jobs are coming to Cairo to staff a new, 16 bed emergency room, something Cairo hasn't had in 25 years.

"This new hospital wing will save lives," said Fred Bernstein, CEO of Community Health and Emergency Services.

Bernstein has worked for years for this $6 million expansion at the Cairo Megaclinic.

"For the people who need emergency care such as cardiovascular care, the sooner we can get someone in, the better. This will greatly help with that," Bernstein said.

The Megaclinic provides basic doctors visits, dental, and outpatient surgeries, with a lab and radiology department on site.

But the expansion will create a 16 bed wing with 24/7 emergency services.

The project is expected to create about 40 new jobs during construction, with an additional 90 jobs after completion.

But for Cairo Mayor Tyrone Coleman, the upgrade in healthcare is priority number one.

"The addition of jobs is great, no question," Coleman said. "But helping save lives, that's what I'm thinking about."

Bids on the project should be approved by next spring.

The building is slated for completion in 2013.
