POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Authorities have arrested the man they say recently targeted church goers in Butler County.

It all started on August 28 when about 5 cars were broken into outside the Fellowship General Baptist Church.

Then last Sunday, on September 11, another 5 cars were broken into outside the Agee Fellowship Church on the north end of Poplar Bluff.

In each case purses were taken.

The sheriff's department got a tip later that day on the 11th of a suspicious vehicle and man walking the ditch line of a private road not far from the Agee church.

That night, Sheriff Mark Dobbs located a small pond in that area where purses and some of their contents were found.

Officers got a description of the vehicle, which eventually led authorities to the car owner's boyfriend.

Cody Mayes of Poplar Bluff was arrested last night on outstanding warrants, and now faces numerous charges.

Officers say when they arrived at his residence they also found an active meth lab.
