Military ship drops anchor in Chester, Ill.

A military ship used in World War II has dropped anchor in Chester, Illinois.

The USS LST 325 arrived last Thursday afternoon and is staying until Sunday, September 18.

Thousands of people were on hand Saturday to look at and learn what the ship and those who fought did.

The LST was a ship designed to land battle-ready tanks, troops and supplies directly onto enemy shores.

These ships were useful in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. All military branches used this type of ship.

These ships were usually scrapped or given to other countries when not in service. 50 men saved this one from a scrap yard in Greece.

They brought the ship back to educate others in the future and also to preserve the memory of those who died on them. All the men who died on the ship have their names displayed on them.

The next stop for the USS LST 355 is Aurora.

The hours to visit Sunday are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
