Workers picket to try to save Murphysboro youth center

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Employees of the Illinois Youth Center in Murphysboro and their union are fighting to save the facility from closing.

Workers began picketing at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Highways 13 and 127 in Murphysboro.

The center can accommodate 160 juveniles. Nearly 100 jobs will be lost if the building is closed.

The picketers are also calling on state lawmakers to find funding and prevent the closing of 6 other state facilities that would put 2,000 people out of work.

Carly O'Keefe will have more on the uncertain future of the center tonight on Heartland News at 6.
