Chicago man charged with making threat against SIUC

A Chicago man is behind bars, accused of making a serious threat against Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

According to a release from United States Attorney Stephen Wigginton, 23-year-old Maurice Leon Wiggins was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 8, 2011. The grand jury returned an indictment charging him with willfully making a bomb threat.

According to that indictment, Wiggins sent a message to the campus crime watch saying he planned to kill 4,000 students and staff by bombing three dormitories and a student center between September and November 2011. The indictment says Wiggins made that threat on August 29, 2011.

Wiggins was arrested on Monday, September 12 and made his initial appearance before the federal district court in Chicago.

If convicted, Wiggins could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison, pay a $250,000 fine or both.

The investigation into the threat was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Southern Illinois University Police Department.
