Parade on eve of 9/11 anniversary honors veterans

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

Veterans and their families from across southern Illinois communities gathered Saturday morning for a celebration and parade to honor our countries soldiers.

This marks the 6th year that the Veterans on Parade have marched through the streets of Marion.

And this year's parade held more significance to honoring our men and women in uniform on the eve of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

"So many times veterans are taken for granted for what they do for the country," said SSGT Joshua Watson of the United States Marine Corps.

"And today we're here for a special 9/11 timeframe to honor the people who have given their lives, the ultimate sacrifice to their country."

The events on that September 11th 2001, started a war on terrorism that we are still fighting to this day, which is why it's so important to remember and honor our soldiers.

"Just all of them who put their lives on the line everyday for us strangers. We're strangers to them. But they do it for us because we're fellow Americans,'' said Cherly Price, mother of LCPL Kyle Price.

And for the second straight year the Gold Star Mothers of fallen soldiers in southern Illinois were the parade's grand marshals.
