Evacuation order from propane leak lifted

The evacuation for the area of US 51/Ill 154 area has been lifted. All roadways are now open.

A liquid propane leak caused a half-mile evacuation zone around the intersection of US 51 and Rte 154 in Perry County, Illinois Thursday morning.

About 33 homes were evacuated.

The liquid propane leak was from a mobile storage unit, according to Perry County Emergency Management.

The driver of the propane tanker noticed a problem about three miles from Ferrell Gas Company where he was making a delivery.  The pop off valve on the top of the propane tanker broke and was spilling out gas, according to Adam Hill with Perry County Emergency Management.

Hill says the driver got to the propane yard and the pump on the tanker had frozen so he was unable to off-load it.  Workers from Ferrell Gas repaired the valve.

Several fire departments as well as police and emergency management assisted.

The roads were shut down for about an hour and a half to two hours.

Shelters were established at the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville and the American Legion in Du Quoin.
