Zeigler firefighters battle more than 60 acre brush fire

Zeigler firefighters kept busy Tuesday afternoon and evening battling a large brush fire.

Firefighters were called Tuesday afternoon to the old mine property just west of Zeigler for a brush fire.

The old mine "gob" piles had ignited the brush covering the mine property and started a fast moving fire, according to the Zeigler Fire Department.

"Our fire units arrived on scene and reported a rapidly spreading fire," said Lieutenant Kathie Flowers in a news released to the media. "It's been very dry lately, and that coupled with the windy conditions yesterday made fighting the fire tough."

Zeigler Fire Chief David Grear submitted a Box alarm for the fire, which brought in fire units from Royalton, West Frankfort, Bush and Williamson County.

Chief Grear says the fire ended up burning approximately 60-75 acres.

There were no injuries and no structures damaged in the fire.
