Local shelter uses Facebook to give dogs second chance at adoption

Stop by the outdoor pens at the Sikeston Area Humane Society shelter, and you'll see a pen full of playful pups, all vying for your attention.

But the tough truth here is, their days are numbered.

"Some of these dogs we've had here for 6, 7 months", says Sikeston Area Humane Society Director Trace White. "We have two of them that were born here and they're coming up on a year old."

That's why White has 14 dogs on what he calls the euth list, meaning they're slated to be euthanized.

White says while four need to be put down for health or temperament reasons, the other 10 can go to good homes.

The problem is, finding one.

"I hope somebody comes out and gets her ", shelter volunteer Tracy says of a boxer mix pup. "She is a sweetheart."

So, the shelter's taking its plea online.

Second Chances of SEMO is a Facebook page dedicated to giving these dogs a second chance at a good home.

"Basically, we just take those dogs, lower the prices just to the vet bills, and send them out", White says of the dogs on the Facebook page.

"We have a lot of people emailing us about fostering if they don't have money to afford getting a dog", says shelter receptionist Chris Jackson. "So, we're doing anything we can to try to help."

White says, so far, their Facebook plea is working. Most of the dogs featured here are being adopted. Other people are offering donations to pay for vet bills and keep these guys around for as long as possible.

"I've gotten, so far, seven dogs off my euth list. And we just did this, like I said, Tuesday", White said. "That's the best part about it so far, is everyday taking my marker to the euth list and take off a dog."

To learn more about the dogs, search "Sikeston Area Humane Society" and "Second Chances of SEMO" on Facebook.
