Body of missing swimmer found in river

McCracken County authorities have found the body a missing Kentucky man believed to have drowned in the Tennessee River.

The body was recovered around 6:15 a.m. Saturday by McCracken County DES.

The victim was found near an area known as Owens Island near the mouth of the Tennessee River in the water, said Sheriff Jon Hayden.

His body was found around 7 miles from where he was last seen swimming Thursday afternoon.

No foul play has been suspected, Hayden said.

Investigators say Thursday afternoon, 47-year-old Jeffrey Kirkpatrick anchored his boat in the river to go swimming.  But when Kirkpatrick and his girlfriend entered the water, the strong current began pulling them away from the anchored boat.  Kirkpatrick's girlfriend managed to swim to the bank but Kirkpatrick was unable to escape the strong current.

Rescue teams searched the river until 9 p.m. Thursday night but were unable to locate Kirkpatrick. Four agencies resumed the search at 6 a.m. Friday.

The McCracken County coroner's office is investigating the incident.
