Car surfing can be dangerous

PERRY COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -Car surfing is certainly nothing new for our society, but is making a resurgence among young people.

"Don't even try it, don't attempt it. It's extremely dangerous," said Illinois State Police Trooper David Sneed.

"It seems like somebody is always thinking out of the box, coming up with some sort of creative idea that tends to be extremely dangerous. Car surfing is one of those things."

But, even with that simply warning from police there are still plenty of young people who are trying to ride on the top of a car while someone else drives it down the road.

"The person getting on top of the car needs to understand the dangers that might be there, head trauma, paralysis, and possibly spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair," said Trooper Sneed.

The trend maybe thrilling to some, but some teens still aren't sold on the idea of trying to hold onto a car as it's driven down the road.

"It's dangerous and it's not worth the risk of your life just to get on the hood of a car and try to be cool for your friends," said Robert Plumlee.

"It just sounds kind of stupid. Why would I get on top of a car when it's moving? It's pretty dangerous," said Maggie Cox.

Which is why those who have tried car surfing and survived, say they don't want to try it again.

"I was 15 at the time. It was crazy and it's something I would never do again," said Christy Pulley.

Now that I think about it to get on top of a car and do donuts in a field or something, nothing that I ever want to do again."

Still there are some young people who say they're willing to give the ride a go.

"I would do it depending on how fast they're going, I might try car surfing," said Mikalean Barr.

A decision that could be your lat one for a moment of fun.
