CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Two Cape Girardeau men face charges after a shooting early Sunday morning.

Jimmy Ray Bell, 28, and Seth Andrew Summers, 31, face 1st degree assault and armed criminal action charges.

Joshua Abernathie, 23, was shot in the left side of the head on County Road 535 in the Neely's Landing area, according to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.  He is expected to recover, and should be released Monday evening.

Investigators say all three people went to the location together.

Abernathie told police all three of them parked on a county road and were drinking alcoholic beverages when Bell displayed a handgun.  He then told police he was sprayed in the face with pepper spray and shot by Bell.

After Abernathie was shot, he was able to make it to a neighbor's house who called for help around 3 a.m.

"We're talking about a part of the county that's kind of an isolated area," said Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Eric Friedrich. "It's in the Neely's Landing area, so I mean he was fortunate where he was at on that particular county road to find somebody at that time of the night."

Bell and Summers were arrested a short time later after leaving the area in Summers' vehicle, according to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office.

"We're fortunate that we were able to relay who it was and what they were driving and then we were able to take them into custody probably 30 minutes after we received the 9-1-1 call, so it's the kind of ending you want to have he apparently is going to be alright, and the bad guys are in jail," said Friedrich.

Bell and Summers are being held on $200,000 cash bond each.
