Ex-sheriff pleads not guilty to weapons charges

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A former Carter County sheriff has pleaded not guilty to federal weapons and drug charges.

Tommy Adams surrendered to the Federal Marshall's office on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilty at the arraignment and bond was set $25,000.

Officials at the Federal Courthouse say Adams is released on bond.

A pre-trial hearing has been set for September 14.

Adams was indicted on August 18, 2011 by a federal grand jury in Cape Girardeau.

The ex-sheriff was indicted on charges of 3 counts of possession of stolen firearms, 1 count of sale of a stolen firearm and 1 count of being an unlawful user of controlled substances in possession of firearms.

If convicted Adams faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison and-or a maximum fine of $250,000 on each count, as well as a maximum term of supervised release of 3 years.
