Job opportunities available for Ill. veterans

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

Well paying job opportunities as highway maintainers are available for Illinois veterans and others seeking employment.

The state is hosting a resource fair in Cairo on August 29 at the Cairo VFW on Sycamore St. from 10 a.m. to noon, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Those attending will learn about highway maintenance jobs, the application and testing process and commercial driver's license upgrade information.

Officials say the starting salary for highway maintainers is $4,394 per month. Applications should be taken to the Department of Central Management Services (CMS), which is the state's hiring agency.

Those who apply will need to take the highway maintainer test. Veterans are given hiring preference for highway maintainer positions.

The main requirement for the jobs is to have an Ill. class A commercial driver's license that is endorsed "N" for tankers or "X" for tankers with hazardous materials, and non-restricted air-brakes.

Also, one year of driving experience is required that is free of incidents that could result in license suspension or revocation.

Highway maintainers work form IDOT maintenance yards, driving and operating heavy-duty maintenance trucks; including plows and salt spreaders, tractors, mowers, pavement marking and other heavy equipment.

The position also includes cleaning and clearing rights-of-way along IDOT highways and roads and patching and repairing roads and bridges.

Applications are available online. Contact Danielle Harrell for more information at (217) 524-1635 or by email.
