The campus police department at Three Rivers Community College has transitioned into a public safety department.

The new designation makes the department eligible for various grants, including medical response grants or fire safety and protection grants, according to Scott Wiggs, Director of Facilities and Security Management.

Officers are already trained first responders. College officials hope that the new designation will allow the force to complete a basic firefighting course as well as a basic fire suppression course.

Right now, officers provide various services for the college: helping students find building, providing vehicle assists, and security escorts for students.

The main Three Rivers Community College Campus is already designated as a State Area Coordination Center. In the event of an emergency, certain buildings on campus would be used by state and federal officials to work through the crisis.

There are also plans to develop an on campus State Emergency Management Association Command Center. It would double as the new home for the Department of Public Safety as well as the college's Public Safety Institute.

The Three Rivers Department of Public Safety is located in the Bess Student center, behind the gymnasium entrance.
