Cancer gala helps patients get life saving treatment

The American Cancer Society and Saint Francis Medical Center have teamed up for a big event on Saturday, August 27.

Proceeds from the "All in for a Cure" cancer gala will benefit the American Cancer Society's transportation assistance programs.

The program provides services that help patients get life saving cancer treatment.

One of those programs is called Road to Recovery. Valley Collins of Perryville uses the service.

"Some days are good and some days are bad and I don't know when or what," said Collins.

Thanks to the Road to Recovery Program, Collins, doesn't have to worry as the undergoes chemotherapy and radiation treatment for lung cancer.

Drivers like Tom Metheny of Marble Hill volunteer their time and transportation to make sure Collins and other patients get their life saving treatment.

"This is really, really rewarding. Meeting a lot of nice people," said Metheny.

The Road to Recovery program will provide hundreds of rides this year to patients in Southeast Missouri who cannot drive themselves.

That adds up to 300 life saving treatments to those in need!

But Collins and Metheny say it's so much more than just a ride.

It's a program that provides much needed support for those facing a tough time in their lives.

"This is the only thing that gets me through because I know I'm going to meet them and their faces and their motivation," said Collins, "I didn't realize I'd missed it until I ran into these guys," she added.

"You just need to listen and don't offer a lot of advice, just listen," said Metheny.

The transportation assistance program also gives $50 dollar gas cards to those who travel at least 30 miles one way for treatment.

This year they've provided more than $32,000 to those seeking treatment.
