House fire in Cairo called accidental

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

Emergency crews in Cairo were called out to a house fire around 9:30 Monday night.

The fire was at the home located at 36th and Elm streets.

According to Cairo Fire Chief John Meyer, when they arrived they found smoke coming from the back of the home. Firefighters entered the front of the house to begin dousing the flames.

At the same time, other firefighters went around to the rear of the house where they found a man who told them there was no one else inside.

Chief Meyer says the man told them he had been cooking and either fell asleep or passed out and when he awoke the home was on fire.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation and later taken to a hospital. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.

The chief says this is the first house fire in Cairo since April.
