Quinn signs new laws affecting behavioral health

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn has signed new laws affecting treatment of behavioral health problems in Illinois.

Quinn signed the legislation Thursday at Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights.

One measure will require insurance companies to provide equal coverage for mental health and substance abuse disorders. Another creates a task force to develop a plan for state mental health and developmental disabilities services.

Other new laws create regional behavioral health networks statewide and permanently excuse those with serious behavioral disorders from jury duty.

Quinn says "no one should be forced to forgo critical mental health care because of where they live or because their insurance charges more."
