Family of man accused of killing officer blames mental illness

Emotional words from the parents of a Hayti man, accused of killing a Caruthersville police officer.

Rhonda and Danny Webster watched as their son, 29-year-old Deontay Williamson, went before a judge for the first time.

Williamson's accused of intentionally ramming a stolen car into Officer Evan Burns' squad car, killing Burns at the scene.

The Webster's say they blame Williamson's actions on a mental illness.

Members of several law enforcement agencies also filled the courtroom in support of Evan Burns, wearing black bands over their badges.

Evan Burns, 28, of Caruthersville was killed in the crash on Highway 84 about two miles northwest of town.

Deontay Jamarr Williamson, 29, of O'Fallon and Hayti is charged with murder 1st degree, armed criminal action, assault 1st degree, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest by feeling.

The sheriff says the crash was the ending to a chase involving an assault suspect from O'Fallon, Missouri.

Williamson, still being held without bond, will be back in court on the August 29.
