Explosion at Rend Lake Carbide injures one person

BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

A late-morning explosion at Rend Lake Carbide in Benton has left one person injured.

According to Benton Fire Chief Gary Kasper, an employee was trying to open a 44-gallon drum with a torch around 10:30 a.m. when it exploded.

Vapors and liquid in the drum got hot and exploded reportedly throwing the man 40-feet in the air.

The employee suffered 2nd degree burns and some bone fractures.

He was airlifted to St. John's Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
