KARNAK, IL (KFVS) -

A man who participated in a standoff with police is now charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Around 9:29 a.m. Wednesday, the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office received a phone call about an intoxicated man involved in a domestic dispute in the 200 block of Illinois Ave. in Karnak.

Police say the man is David Sharp, 44, of Karnak.

While a Pulaski County deputy was walking toward the home, Sharp came out the front door with a shotgun, police said.

Sharp threatened to kill the deputy, according to state police, and fired his gun at the officer. The deputy then took cover and asked for assistance from other officers.

Police say the suspect then shot a tractor passing by, and broke out both windows.

The sheriff says he spoke with the suspect for about 90 minutes who told him he had cancer and didn't want to go on anymore.

The man eventually surrendered to police after the standoff.

The suspect was under the influence of methamphetamine and prescription pills, police said. He was then taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Sharp is charged with 2 counts of attempted murder and 2 counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm by the Pulaski County State's Attorney.

He was taken to the Tri-County Detention Center.

Police say the investigation is continuing.
