Former Murray State Head Coach named in recruiting scandal

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Former Murray State head football coach Joe Pannunzio is named in a story reported Tuesday night by Yahoo! Sports.

For nearly a year the online site investigated Miami of Florida Hurricanes' booster and convicted ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro for giving improper benefits to numerous Miami athletes, the majority of whom played football.

According to Yahoo! Sports multiple sources said coach Pannunzio, who spent the past five seasons as the Hurricanes' tight ends coach and special teams coordinator, brought top level recruits to meet Shapiro so they could listen to boosters make recruiting pitches to attend Miami.

Shapiro says he gave money, cars, yacht trips, jewelry, televisions and other gifts between 2002 and 2010, when he was a booster at the school.

In June, Shapiro was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he admitted to securities fraud and money laundering. The NCAA is investigating Shapiro's role with the program.

Coach Pannunzio is currently on staff with Alabama.
