Travelers hate I-57 detour, businesses love extra income

Tuesday, Illinois Department of Transportation temporarily shut down the Interstate 57 bridge between Cairo and Charleston.  Contractors need three days for repairs on the bridge.  Traffic is now being detoured through Cape Girardeau using Illinois Route 3 and Interstate 55.

On Tuesday afternoon, traffic was flowing pretty well on MO-74.  Where IL-146 meets Route 3, traffic was backed up and officers were directing traffic.  Many out of towners that say they weren't planning on an hour delay, but businesses along the detour say they're happy to have the extra travelers.

"We were just about out of Illinois and they headed us back north so this is putting us behind schedule," said two travelers heading to New Orleans for the International Red Hat Society Conference.

"Just been busy non-stop on the gas, we've sold so much that we've called in for more," explained Fast Stop cashier Kelly Masters.

The bridge is expected to be closed until sometime on Thursday.

According to IDOT, the I-57 bridge over the Mississippi River from Missouri to Illinois will be closed to north and southbound traffic from Tuesday, Aug. 16 to Thursday, August 18.

Marked detour routes will be in place for north and southbound traffic:

  • NB: I-55 in Missouri, MO 74 (through Cape Girardeau), IL 146, IL 3, I-57
  • SB: IL 3 (Exit 1), IL 146, MO 74 (through Cape Girardeau), I-55.
