Van Buren tourism business back

VAN BUREN, MO (KFVS) -

Good news for business owners in Van Buren, tourism is back in full force despite the weak summer start.

Matt Bedell works at The Landing in Van Buren, and said he believes the flooding and high gas prices kept visitors away during the month of June.

But, he says with the extreme heat conditions in July, they had attendance record breaking weekends.

"I think people saved up all of June and decided to come July," said Bedell.

Kellie Duhon said at the beginning of the summer her business was down 75 percent.

"June everybody thought we were still flooded, or that we weren't going to be open because of the flooding and the damages because I kept getting phone calls from people asking if we were open," said Duhon.

But now, she says it's really picked back up.

"The heat I think actually drew them here because of the river," said Duhon. "A lot of people that come here, they mainly come here because of the floating down the Current River."

Even though July is a big help, Bedell says the summer as a whole will still most likely be a lower profit than past summers.

"Last summer was really so good and we had good weather all summer, so if you're comparing it to last summer, not as good so we were behind in June, but definitely July did help," said Bedell.

Both Bedell and Duhon hope they can get people like Tony Morgan to visit even after the kids go back to school.

"It's better than sitting inside," said Morgan. "You get out with people you don't meet. We just these people over here, we didn't know them so just be sociable."
