Popular Cape Girardeau pizza place catches fire

The well known Dino's Pizza restaurant and the apartments above it were involved in an early morning fire Wednesday.

The fire was called in to 911 2:14 a.m. for the fire at 1031 Broadway.

According to a man who lived on the upper floor, he was woken up by what he described as a loud boom.  He then saw heavy smoke coming from behind his refrigerator, but then noticed it coming from other areas of his apartment.

He and others in the building were all able to get out without injury.

When firefighters arrived, light to moderate smoke was coming from the first and second floors, but the fire could not be seen from outside.

The heavy fire that started in the basement had extended up through the center wall to the first floor.

Several crews found the fire, including units from Jackson, Scott City and Gordonville. Off duty firefighters were also called in to assist.

Crews had the fire put out at 3:01 a.m.

Two house cats were overcome by smoke and brought out of the building.

Dino's Pizza is located next to Houck Stadium at Southeast Missouri State University.

The fire is under investigation by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department and State Fire Marshall's Office.  No word yet on a cause of the fire.

The fire caused about $250,000 worth of damage.
