A disaster can happen at any time and you've head the American Red Cross reminder time and again that you need to be prepared!

Organizers at the Red Cross of Southeast Missouri say having an emergency preparedness kit is only the first step though.

Semo Red Cross Emergency Services Director, Jamie Koehler, says you need to update that kit periodically.

She suggests you pick a date like an anniversary, your kids birthday or a holiday to make sure your remember to update that kit.

Some of the items in your kit need to be looked at even more often, so the first of the month -- now -- is a good time to do that!

"There's a lot of items that go in the kit," Koehler said. "It takes a lot of attention, so monthly is really a good idea to take a look at it, go through it, because we encourage people to put medication in there, prescriptions, copies of documents, and our lives change on a daily basis, and so our kits need to be kept up to date also."
