Grandmother remembers Navy SEAL killed in helicopter attack

(WMC-TV) - Among those killed in a helicopter attack in Afghanistan was Tennessee native Aaron Vaughn.

Obion County was home to Vaughn, a Navy SEAL.  His heart was in the Navy, where he set his sights on making the elite SEAL Team Six right out of boot camp.

He was the first of Geneva Vaughn's 10 grandchildren.

"Aaron loved his country, and he was willing to give his life to protect those he loved," she said.

Aaron Vaughn had a wife and young family of his own.

"His new baby girl was two weeks old when he was deployed to Afghanistan this time, and he has a little boy that will be two in September," said Geneva Vaughn.

The children are not aware of their father's many accomplishments or the secretive nature of his dangerous career.

"So we had to keep everything a secret and keep everything to ourselves," said Geneva Vaughn.  "Not be able to brag on him or tell anything about what he did or anything.  But now, Aaron paid the supreme sacrifice, and we can brag on him now."

On this 30th birthday in June, Aaron Vaughn told his grandmother not to worry about him because if something happened to him, he knew where he was going.

"Aaron was a Christian and he's with Jesus now," she said.  "I can stand on that promise that I'll see him again some day."

Funeral arrangements for Aaron Vaughn are not complete.  The family is hoping to have a memorial service in Obion County.

Aaron Vaughn will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
