CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the Summertime, June through September is the most dangerous time on the roads, August being the worst month of all.
The group says Saturday is the most dangerous day of the week, and 6pm to 9pm is the most dangerous part of the day.
Catherine Lang believes the danger comes from the weather's effect on the roads.
"The only difference I've noticed is the extreme heat, which we haven't had in a number of years," said Lang. "It's buckling our streets, the concrete, you've got to be careful how you drive, because you never know where there's a sink hole, because the streets kind of buckle, so you have to be careful."
But most people said they haven't noticed anything at all.
"The heat can get to people, but I haven't noticed any kind of a behavior change in people's driving habits or anything like that," said Kevin Richards.
"I haven't noticed it, but that's not to say it's not true," said Russel Friga.
"[We] went down to Florida, and we never saw one accident, or never saw anything," said Paula Pletcher. "Everyone was doing what they're supposed to do on their normal vacation trips."
Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper Clark Parrot said on Missouri highways, the numbers are actually down from this time last year.
The study did say according to odds, the safest month is March, the safest day is Tuesday, and the safest time of day is 3am to 6am.
