Refrigerator recycling program in Metropolis

People who receive their electricity form the city of Metropolis now have a way to get rid of their old refrigerators and get a $35 prepaid card, as well.

The City of Metropolis, the Illinois Municipal Electric agency and the Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. are initiating the "Recycle My Fridge Program."

Their goal is to make it easy for people to save both money and the environment.

Residents of owner-occupied homes served by the city can schedule an appointment to have their refrigerator or freezer picked up form inside their homes, free of charge by calling 877-341-2313 or by visiting the program's website.

A copy of a recent electric bill should be handy, as you will need to know your account number.

Here is how to participate:

-Residents must be a City of Metropolis residential electric customer and own and occupy the home form which the refrigerator or freezer is taken.

-Residents must own the refrigerator or freezer, which must be a 10 to 30 cubic feet and be in working cooling condition.

-The appliance must be plugged in the night before pickup.

-Appliances will be picked up, at no charge, from the address listed on he resident's billing account.

-Participants will receive a $35 prepaid card in the mail within 4 weeks after collection of the appliance.

-Limit of 2 appliances per-household, per-year.

-Only secondary appliances are eligible.
