Arkansas State Trooper injured in crash

CLAY COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - An Arkansas State Trooper was involved in a car crash Friday evening on Highway 135 near Knobel in Clay County.

According to an ASP report, Mark Vavak, 41 of Piggott was injured in the accident.  His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

According to Clay County Sheriff Gerald McClung the officer was traveling south bound on Highway 135 near Knobel, ran off on the east side of the highway, struck a tree, and then over turned. McClung says when they arrived on the scene the troop was trapped in the car.

Once they were able to extracted the officer, he was transported to the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

McClung adds several different agencies responded. "They just came from everywhere to help because it was a bad situation. At first we thought the vehicle was overturned and on fire, but it was only the radiator," said McClung.

He says they are unsure of the officer's condition are this time, but say he was responsive.

According to a state police report, Trooper Vavak had finished investigating a car accident at the same location and was pulling onto the roadway when he lost control.

It's believed that he may have experienced a medical emergency causing him to lose control of his patrol car.
