SIU chief's granddaughter shuns Carbondale school

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - A granddaughter of Southern Illinois University's president says she won't be attending the system's flagship Carbondale campus after all.

The Chicago Tribune reports that 18-year-old Maddie Poshard has opted to attend Xavier University in Cincinnati on scholarship, after news surfaced that she'd won a scholarship to SIU in Carbondale.

The Tribune reported last month that Poshard was among 24 students picked for a taxpayer-funded 4-year, full academic scholarship worth about $80,000.

She later turned down the scholarship. Her grandfather, SIU President Glenn Poshard, said the family would help pay for her education in Carbondale.

Planning to study pre-med, Maddie Poshard says she's looking forward to starting her education free from the public spotlight.

Maddie Poshard is a graduate of Riverton High School near Springfield.
