Mistakenly released inmate found hiding in creek

JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Jefferson County Sheriff's Office investigators arrested an escaped inmate accused of stealing another inmate's identity.

Investigators arrested Stephen Brooks, 43, of Fenton hiding in a creek along Butler Hill Road in south St. Louis County.

Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer says Stephen Brooks is accused stole the identity of another inmate and was inadvertently released.

It happened Monday around 6:30 p.m. when Boyers says Brooks told false information to the correction officer and he was released.

Brooks was arrested and taken back to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Jail after he was found in the creek.

Additional charges will be applied for through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
